Interview published in Area Development...

Jack Gido and I were interviewed by Area Development magazine during last June. The interview appeared as an article, "Back to the Basics: Finding Skilled Workers," in the August 2006 issue of the magazine.

An Adobe PDF copy of the interview is accessible at:

We weigh in on freightcars...

Rose Baker and I completed a quick and dirty analysis of the employment, income, and tax consequences of the potential loss of a 450-job railcar manufacturing facility in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, at the request of a Johnstown newspaper, The Tribune -Democrat. Here is an Adobe PDF copy of the online version of the article. "Freightcar Exit Would Cost Entire Region," by business reporter, Shawn Piatek, that appeared in print on 24 January 2007:

Nothing is lost...

Nothing is Lost
--Noel Coward

Deep in our sub-conscious, we are told
Lie all our memories, lie all the notes
Of all the music we have ever heard
And all the phrases those we loved have spoken,
Sorrows and losses time has since consoled,
Family jokes, out-moded anecdotes
Each sentimental souvenir and token
Everything seen, experienced, each word
Addressed to us in infancy, before
Before we could even know or understand
The implications of our wonderland.
There they all are, the legendary lies
The birthday treats, the sights, the sounds, the tears
Forgotten debris of forgotten years
Waiting to be recalled, waiting to rise
Before our world dissolves before our eyes
Waiting for some small, intimate reminder,
A word, a tune, a known familiar scent
An echo from the past when, innocent
We looked upon the present with delight
And doubted not the future would be kinder
And never knew the loneliness of night.

Great trip to St. Louis; contract awarded...

Rose Baker and I treveled to St. Louis to attend a U.S. Department of Labor conference on military base closings. While at the conference we learned that we had been awarded a contract with the Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Workforce Investment Board for our proposal, "Forecast of Economic, Population, and Employment Consequences of the Closing of the Willow Grove Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base." Work starts soon.

Stayed at the St.Louis Hyatt at Union Station, which is a very beautiful architectural monument and an impressive historical site. Here are some of my photos of the lobby of the St. Louis Hyatt, which is the Grand Hall of the former train station (other photos at http://www.stlouisunionstation.com/info/photoGallery.cfm):

They served Starbucks coffee throughout the conference.Coffee, hot and dark
